Vilakku Lamps
Kerala, Tamil Nadu
Illuminating sacred traditions
The Nilavilakku (also termed as Vilakku) is a traditional floor-standing lamp commonly used in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is lit in temples before prayers. People also light these lamps at home as a part of their daily rituals. The lamp plays an important role in Hindu ceremonies.

The Making
Hindu temples use various types of lamps, like the kuthuvilakku (brass lamps) and thookuvilakku (hanging lamps). The thiruvilakku; or kuthuvilakku are exquisitely crafted lamps, also known as deepa in Sanskrit. They symbolise Mahalakshmi, goddess of fortune and prosperity. The lamps are believed to ensure the well-being of the family. There are three different ways to light the bronze or brass nilavilakku. Firstly, with a single wick directed towards the deity or sacred space. Secondly, with two lighted wicks in two directions. The third way is with five wicks representing the five directions.
The Legacy
The lighting of lamps is an age-old tradition, still practised in many households. While before the advent of electricity, the lamps provided light, the practice is still present in homes where evening lamps are lit. They symbolically are also meant to dispel the darkness of ignorance.
